COIR FIBRE IN DETAIL
COIR is a multifunctional natural fibre derived from the coconut fruit's mesocarp tissue or husk. When cleansed after being removed from the coconut husk, the fibre is generally golden in colour, thus the moniker "The Golden Fibre."
The fibrous husk of the coconut shell is known as coir. Because coir is tough and naturally resistant to seawater, it protects the fruit long enough for it to float on ocean currents for months before washing up on a sandy beach, where it may sprout and grow into a tree if there is enough fresh water, because all the other nutrients it requires have been carried along with the seed. Because of these properties, the fibres are used in floor and outdoor matting, aquarium filters, cordage and rope, and garden mulch.
